After years of using N26 Metal as my primary travel bank account, I can tell you this: it’s the most complete premium bank account available in Europe right now. At €16.90/month, it’s not cheap — but for the right kind of traveller, it pays for itself multiple times over every month.

This is my updated review for 2026. I’ve verified every feature against N26’s current offerings and assessed honestly who should upgrade and who shouldn’t.

What Is N26 Metal?

N26 Metal is the top-tier plan from N26, the Berlin-based digital bank founded in 2013. It sits above the Standard (free), Smart (€4.90/month), and Go (€9.90/month) plans, and targets frequent travellers and anyone who wants a bank account that does more than just hold their money.

The headline features: a premium 18-gram metal Mastercard, unlimited free ATM withdrawals worldwide, 1% cashback on spending outside the EEA, comprehensive Allianz travel insurance, access to 1,300+ airport lounges, free stock and ETF trading, and ECB-linked savings rates. We’ll break all of these down in detail.

N26 Metal is available to residents of Germany, Austria, France, Spain, Italy, Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, Finland, and several other European countries. You need a registered address in one of these countries to open an account.

The N26 Metal Card: What You Actually Get

Let’s start with the physical card, because it’s genuinely impressive. Unlike the plastic cards that come with most bank accounts, N26 Metal ships you an 18-gram Mastercard made from actual metal. It’s available in three finishes for 2026: Amber, Black, and Slate.

The card is heavy enough that you notice it in your wallet. It’s the kind of card that gets comments when you pull it out at a restaurant. That’s somewhat superficial — but it’s also just nice, and it signals something about the quality of the product behind it.

More practically: the card is a Mastercard debit card accepted everywhere. Apple Pay and Google Pay are supported. Contactless payments work out of the box.

Free ATM Withdrawals Worldwide

This is one of N26 Metal’s best features, and it’s also available on the Go plan below it. With N26 Metal, you get free ATM withdrawals anywhere in the world — no per-withdrawal fees, no currency conversion markup. You pay the real mid-market exchange rate (the same rate you see on Google or XE.com) on every withdrawal.

For context: most European banks charge €2–5 per foreign ATM withdrawal plus a 1.5–2.5% currency conversion fee. If you withdraw cash twice a week while travelling, that’s easily €30–50/month in fees that N26 Metal eliminates entirely.

Within the Eurozone (on the free Standard plan), you get 3 free ATM withdrawals per month. On Metal, there’s no limit. Withdraw as often as you need.

1% Cashback on International Spending

N26 Metal (and Go) gives you 1% cashback on all purchases made outside the European Economic Area, UK, and Switzerland. There’s no cap on how much you can earn.

So if you spend €500/month on a work trip to the US, that’s €5 back. Spend €1,000 across Asia in a month? €10 back. Over a year of regular international travel, this adds up to a meaningful amount — and it’s the only major digital bank account in Europe offering cashback at this level without a spend threshold.

Note: cashback applies to new Metal subscribers and is valid for up to 12 months from account opening (or upgrade). Check N26’s current T&Cs for exact eligibility as this may vary.

Allianz Travel Insurance: The Full Package

This is where N26 Metal really earns its €16.90/month price tag. The Allianz insurance package that comes with Metal is genuinely comprehensive — we’re talking coverage that would cost €20–40/month to buy separately:

  • Medical expenses — covered up to an unlimited amount worldwide, for the first 90 days of your trip
  • Trip cancellation insurance — up to €5,000 per trip if you need to cancel due to illness, death of a family member, or other covered events
  • Baggage delay and loss — up to €400 if your luggage is delayed or lost by an airline
  • Sports accident insurance — covers injuries from recreational sports activities during your trip
  • Personal liability — protection if you accidentally injure someone or damage property abroad
  • Mobile phone insurance — repair or replacement for your device if it’s damaged or stolen, up to €300 (must be an N26 Metal subscriber for 30+ days)
  • Purchase protection — up to €10,000/year for theft or accidental damage on items purchased with your N26 Metal card (minimum purchase price €100)

The 90-day medical coverage period is exceptional — most premium credit cards cap this at 30 days. If you take long trips or travel multiple times a year, this alone justifies the Metal subscription.

Airport Lounge Access: 1,300+ Lounges Worldwide

N26 Metal gives you access to more than 1,300 airport lounges worldwide through a partner programme. Your first visit is free. After that, additional lounge visits are available at a reduced rate.

This isn’t unlimited free access like some premium credit cards offer — but it’s a meaningful perk for the occasional traveller. If you catch an early morning flight or face a long connection a few times a year, having lounge access available is genuinely valuable: free food, quiet seating, good Wi-Fi, and somewhere civilised to wait.

Free Stock and ETF Trading

N26 Metal includes free stock and ETF trading through the N26 app. You can buy and hold stocks, ETFs, and ready-made funds directly from your N26 account without brokerage fees. Product costs (like ETF TERs) still apply, but trading commissions are zero.

This is a meaningful addition if you’re looking to invest alongside your everyday banking without juggling multiple apps. It won’t replace a dedicated investment platform for serious investors, but for casual investing — regular ETF contributions, for example — it’s a clean, convenient option.

N26 also offers crypto trading within the app, with reduced fees for Metal subscribers.

N26 Spaces: 10 Sub-Accounts for Organised Finances

N26 Metal gives you access to 10 Spaces — sub-accounts that sit within your main N26 account and can be named and earmarked for specific goals. Think “holiday fund,” “tax savings,” “emergency fund,” and so on.

You can also create Shared Spaces — collaborative sub-accounts where you invite friends, family, or a partner to contribute and spend together. Useful for splitting household costs, group trips, or shared savings goals.

N26 Instant Savings: ECB-Linked Interest Rate

New N26 Metal customers who open their account from February 2025 onwards can access N26 Instant Savings, which offers an interest rate linked directly to the European Central Bank’s deposit rate. As of mid-2025, that’s 2% p.a. The rate on your Instant Savings account is locked to the ECB rate that applies when you first open it.

This turns your N26 Metal account into a complete financial hub — current account, investment account, and savings account in one app.

Is N26 Metal Worth It? An Honest Assessment

N26 Metal is worth it if you spend regularly outside the EEA and value insurance coverage. Here’s the honest breakdown:

It’s worth it if you:

  • Travel internationally multiple times per year (especially outside Europe)
  • Spend €400+ per month outside the EEA (1% cashback = €4+/month working toward the fee)
  • Currently pay for travel insurance separately (the Allianz package alone covers the cost)
  • Use airport lounges — even occasionally, the discounted access adds value
  • Want to invest through your bank account without a separate brokerage

Skip Metal if you:

  • Rarely travel outside Europe — the N26 Go plan at €9.90 covers your core needs
  • Already have comprehensive travel insurance through another card or employer
  • Primarily want a fee-free account for European spending — Standard (free) handles this

The sweet spot: someone who travels internationally 6+ times per year, spends €300–500/month outside Europe, and currently has no travel insurance. For that person, N26 Metal is almost certainly saving them money compared to their current setup.
